The Arcane Brotherhood
The Arcane Brotherhood is comprised of all mages ever trained in Da'nuil Kalioth, to put it simply. There are some exceptions to this, naturally. Mages who go renegade are no longer considered members in the Arcane Brotherhood, although they often continue to use the titles. The Brotherhood is not something like a single school, but rather, all of the many schools of the arcane in Da'nuil Kalioth combined, and it is a most powerful force for the cause of magic. It is notable that the Brotherhood does freely accept females, despite its name.
"The Arcane Brotherhood is to be ranked as follows.
i) Aspirant - One who has applied to a school of the arcane for training.
ii) Initiate - One who has been accepted, or is in their first year of training.
iii) Apprentice - One who has finished their first year of training, and is in either their second or third year. At this level, they should be developing cantrip-level arcane abilities.
iv) Assistant - After completing their third year of training, the apprentice becomes an assistant to a specific mage, in the alignment they choose and their field of preference. Apprentices are never forced on mages, and mages are not forced on apprentices. The new-made assistant remains so for a minimum of a year and a day, and a maximum of three years. If, after that time, they have not progressed sufficiently to achieve the next level, they are permanently given the title of Fifth Mage, and their training is finished. If, afterwards, they wish to achieve a superior title, they may challenge a mage of the level they wish to achieve to a Arcane Duel, of the Tournei Pax style.
v) Journeyman - After successfully completing the assistant stage, the mage becomes a journeyman. At this level, they are assumed to be a contributing citizen of society, and must act as such, taking their turn on various councils and posts. Often, they will remain with their previous master from when they were of he Assistant level, training in their field of specialization, but it is not required. After four years, if they have not progressed sufficiently to achieve the next level, they are permanently given the title of Fourth Mage, and their training is finished. If, afterwards, they wish to achieve a superior title, they may challenge a mage of the level they wish to achieve to a Arcane Duel, of the Tournei Pax style.
vi) Adept - After finishing their work as a journeyman, the mage becomes an Adept. At this level, the mage will most commonly either become a junior partner to their previous master, of near-equal status, choose to join a mage guild or group, or leave previous ties and start their own solo learning. After ten years, if the mage has not surpassed the minimum requirements for the next level, they are permanently given the title of Third Mage, although they often use it before that point. If, afterwards, they wish to achieve a superior title, they may challenge a mage of the level they wish to achieve to a Arcane Duel, of the Tournei Pax style.
vii) Master - To become a Master, the Adept must not only be of sufficient strength in their own specialized field, but must achieve certain levels of proficiency in at least three other fields. There is no time limit to train oneself to the next level of proficiency, and these mages often bear the title of Second Mage, and sit on the Lesser Ruling Council.
iix) Grandmaster - To become a Grandmaster is very difficult, and only the truly talented and dedicated achieve it. They must master at least four fields of magic, be able to fight a quartet of Adepts to a standstill in an Arcane Duel of the Tournei Melee style, as well as solve a difficult arcane puzzle. Also, they must become proficient, although mastery is not required, in three additional fields of magic. They must also submit to the Greater Ruling Council two works. A writing upon the nature of magic, and a writing revealing some new aspect of magic, or newly researched technique of magic previously unknown. These mages are commonly known as Mages, and often sit upon the Greater Ruling Council.
ix) Premier - Three of these mages have been known to exist to date. In order to be classified as a Premier, the mage must be able to fight the entire Greater Ruling Council and Lesser Ruling Council to a standstill, without harming any of them, in an Arcane Duel of the Tournei Da'nuil style. Also, they must demonstrate both a practical and theoretical knowledge of the inner workings of magic. As well, they must contribute a Greater Ward to the city's defenses, without disturbing previous Wards or Guardians. Lastly, they must walk the Hall of Darkness, the Hall of Light, and the Hall of Truth. If the chord sounds, they are, indeed, a Premier mage. These mages are revered by all of Da'nuil Kalioth, for they are considered touched by the very essence of magic itself."
