Da'nuil Kalioth
The City of Mages
Centre of arcane learning on the continent of Kisandria, Da'nuil Kalioth has never been conquered. The primary reason for this is that sixty percent of the population claims their profession as a mage, of varying power and prestige. This gives them such an incredible battery of power, along with an amazing variety of techniques, that no enemy has ever been able to stand against them. Luckily, the mages as a group have never shown any real inclination to conquer other lands, being satisfied to conquer the mysteries of the arcane rather than the cities of the manifest. Of course, there are exceptions, but these exceptions are usually the ones that leave, joining armies as arcane advisors, rather than staying to try to raise an army of mages.
Of course, the given population only lists sixty percent of the population. The other forty percent serve in the various supporting roles, in outlying farms, city guards, merchants, and the like. This city has perhaps the lowest crime rate on the continent, as the numbers of diviners present make crime incredibly hard to get away with. Of course, since mages of all alignment are present here, some perform crime in a mystical way, protecting themself from divination in one way or another. The crime that does occur tends to be less overt and more convoluted in nature, often sending awry even the best of investigators.
The city is built in the shape of a perfect circle. The initial layout was designed by magic, although the walls are built of mundane stone and mortar. It would not be good if the city walls could be dispelled, although they are magically strengthened. In the exact circle is built the temple to the force of magic, with various shrines to the aspects of good and evil magics scattered around and mixed together. All this represents how magic is the centre focus of the city, and neutral magic is the balancing point. Also, it represents how good and evil are so mixed in the world, and that it's often hard to separate them, even, or especially, in magic.
The circle of city walls is surrounded, mostly by farmland, but with an occasional smithy or tanner's shop and the like. Additionally, a few mages choose to have homes outside the city walls, although they're not that common. These mages are usually over-protective of their privacy, and ward their homes in swathes and swathes of protective spells, making it impossible for many to even walk near them.
Before one can reach the surrounding forest, one walks exactly three and a half miles. Any direction from the city walls, so long as you go straight, in exactly three and a half miles, you hit forest. There are -no- roads leading to Da'nuil Kalioth. All transport is done by magical gating, and it's nearly impossible to find one's way through the forest to Da'nuil Kalioth, because of the enchantments upon the forest. Most of the few people known to have found their way are promising students of the arcane; indeed, the greatest students always seem to find their way through the forest rather than applying to the city normally, that is, through mystic communication and recommendation from mages in the outer lands.
