Languages of Kisandria
Kisandria is populated by more than a few races, and ergo, has more than a few languages, with some races having several. Languages vary even within races, by dialect, and several aren't even based on race.
Universal - These languages, just about anybody can learn. They're commonly spoken by many races.
Trade Tongue: This language's roots have been forgotten. However, it seems to have the most in common with a number of human dialects, so is commonly assumed to have begun with them. It also uses the same alphabet as the human dialects. It is most commonly spoken among the merchant middle classes, hence the name. Aristocrats and other high-class people often consider those who speak this tongue below them, although they commonly know it themselves. There are exceptions to this bias, as always.
Temple Tongues - These languages are commonly known by the clergy of the High God, or those educated by the clergy. Songs and ritual prayers are written in this language, and spoken in it. It uses a unique alphabet and unique grammatical constructions.
Arcane Tongues - These languages are either magical in nature, or most commonly known by mages, excepting when they're racially-based. Either way, most of this polyglot can be heard and learnt in Da'nuil Kalioth, among other places. The languages that specific spells are written in are not listed, as these are widely varied.
placeholder: This is the tongue that mages most commonly learn in proper academies of learning. It's commonly used in spellbooks and other magic-related scribings.
Heroic Tongues - These tongues are absolutely limited to the votaries and servants of the Heroes of Kisandria. The ability to speak and comprehend them is supernaturally granted by the Heroes, and is not dependant on intelligence or physiology. Thus, they cannot be taught to anyone, except by the Hero granting them the knowledge. Each Hero has their own language. Those that are allied will sometimes allow their votaries and servants to comprehend the Heroic languages of their allies. This is a reciprocal relationship, though, and must be affirmed by both Heroes for it to work, and to allow private communication between their votaries and servants.
Racial Tongues - These tongues occasionally includes languages in the previous groups, but are usually limited to certain races. They're organized by race.
Human Tongues
---Court Tongue: This is the tongue spoken in human courts. There are few aristocrats that do not know it, and for a royal-blooded personage to not know it is unthinkable. Those states that do not have a court, per se, are still known to commonly use this tongue in their governmental business.
---Human Common: This is the tongue spoken by the common human people. There are some dialectal variations between areas, but most humans can understand each other fairly well through this tongue. With the numerical advantages of humans over the other races, this language is also widely available to them.
Imp Tongues
Imps, as magical constructs, have no languages specifically theirs. At creation, mages can choose to imbue the imps with any languages they themselves know. Thus, they can know a wide range of languages.
